Three Bill Monroe Tunes for Bluegrass Guitar

Cost: $75 for three one-hour classes

Online zoom classes taught by Andy Hatfield

Wednesdays, August 17th, 24th, and 31st, 2022 – 8:00PM Eastern

Join Andy as we take on 3 classic Bill Monroe instrumentals to play by yourself or in jams. Although these songs were originally played on mandolin, fiddle, and banjo, they adapt well to guitar. Starting with a simplified melody, we will build up to a complete arrangement. These classes are interactive–you can ask questions along the way, and you will help decide how the final arrangement should sound.

Bill Monroe songs leave a lot of room for interpretation–even on his recordings the fiddle part oftens varies widely from the mandolin part on the same tune. As such, these arrangements will not be strict transcriptions from the recordings. However, they will sound like the song, and should be something you can play by yourself or in a jam.

Road to Columbus

August 17th, 8:00 PM Eastern

A relatively simple melody, we could fill this out with double-stops, licks, various crosspicking rolls, melodic variation, playing the melody in different octaves, mirroring phrases, playing licks over the chord progression, etc. Key of G, Capo 2nd fret.

Join us for this live class where we talk through the arrangement as we create it. You’ll get a pdf tab of the basic melody and final arrangement, and access to a video performance of the song. In addition to posting a video of the 1 hr zoom meeting, I will post a short video recap of the class to help you remember what we talked about.

Brown County Breakdown

August 24th, 8:00 PM Eastern

“Brown County Breakdown” is an inventive three-part tune in the key of E. On the first part, the notes are long and drawn out on the fiddle, and follow a simple arpeggio. The second part goes into motion, and the third part throws in a b7 chord as a twist. We will figure out what to do with the long notes, and might use techniques such as drones, crosspicking rolls, using small variations, playing licks over the chord changes, etc.

Wheel Hoss

August 31st, 8:00 PM Eastern

“Wheel Hoss” is one of those that rhythm guitar players dread (it changes from G to F every other beat in the first part!) In addition to that challenge, mandolin and fiddle players have been known to play it at a fast tempo. We’ll learn the melody of the tune, but also figure out a way to simplify it in case you have to play it at a faster tempo.

Bluegrass Guitar Technique and Idea Builder

Cost: $30 for three 45 minute practice sessions

Online Zoom practice sessions taught by Andy Hatfield

Wednesdays, August 17th, 24th, and 31st, 2022 – 9:15 PM Eastern

Here’s a class I’ve wanted to do for awhile – a weekly practice session for people learning bluegrass guitar. You’ll learn what to practice to become a better flatpicker. Rather than just doing exercises for the sake of exercises, everything we practice is musical and can be applied in some way to flatpicking and bluegrass guitar playing. The goal is to train the hands, the mind, and the ears all at the same time. Practicing like this isn’t necessarily learning song, but it makes learning songs much easier.

Join us for this live weekly 45 minute online flatpicking guitar class. Bring a guitar and a flatpick. For those interested in learning good flatpicking technique and ideas.
