Beyond Carter Style-1.jpg

Beyond Carter Style

Mondays, May 8, 15, and 22nd

Afternoon and Evening Classes -- 2:00 PM EST or 7:00 PM EST

Level: Intermediate

Do you want to learn how to play a song that sounds good all by itself, without having a band or a bunch of people to jam with? If so, this is the class for you!

"Carter-style" guitar playing is a great way to play melody and rhythm at the same time, BUT in this class, we go past the basic melody-strum combination that has been a staple of country and bluegrass for 100 years. We will learn a variety of crosspicking rolls and patterns that we can apply to the melody to make a full-sounding arrangement. This gives us a sound similar to guitarists such as Norman Blake, Tony Rice's famous "Church Street Blues," and many other professional guitarists.

You'll receive access to the tab arrangement, a performance of the song by Andy that you can slow down or speed up to learn at home, and a short video recap of what we went over in class.

Each class is interactive. You can play along at home with the sound off, and unmute your mic when you have a question about something.

Learn to adapt the melody with fills, licks, double-stops, crosspicking, etc.

Monday, May 8th: "Where the Soul of Man Never Dies"

Monday, May 15th: "Bury Me Beneath the Willow"

Monday, May 22nd: "Bonaparte Crossing the Rhine"

Our versions will be different than the inspiration versions above. Instead of copying the artists note-for-note, we will build our own break up from the chords and the melody.

Bluegrass Guitar: Beyond Licks

Wednesdays, May 10, 17, and 24th

2:00 PM EST or 7:00 PM EST

An improvisation method that makes sense

This is the class to take if you are learning to improvise in the bluegrass style.  If you are an intermediate guitar player who is learning to improvise, but is struggling to "put it all together," this class is for you! Instead of trying to force licks into the right place and string them together, we are going to learn how to create musical phrases that lead us through the chord progression of the song, just like the pros do on all their solos!

Each class is interactive. You can play along at home with the sound off, and unmute your mic when you have a question about something.

Class 1: Creating fiddle-tune style phrases, using major scales over chords, scale movements, 7th chord scales, chord transitions

Class 2:  Review class 1 concepts, making smoother chord transitions, bluegrass-style phrases

Class 3:  Review class 2 concepts, using minor scales over chords, blues-style phrases

After each class you'll get:

Access to PDF examples in tab and notation

5 - 10 minute video recap of the class with examples that you can speed up or slow down.

Homework assignments (optional) to help you create more of the kinds of phrases we did in class.
