 Building Bluegrass Guitar Breaks

Level: Intermediate

Do any of these describe you?

  • I can find a melody, but it sounds too simple. How can I make it sound fuller and more professional?
  • I learned a break from TAB, but when I tried to play it at a jam session, it all fell apart.
  • I learned an amazing Tony Rice break and can play it at 70 BPM. At this rate, I should have it up to speed in 8 years.
  • I have no idea where to start to make up a break to a song

There's lots of TAB arrangements out there,  but how do you really create a convincing bluegrass guitar break? In this ongoing class, Andy Hatfield teaches how to build a bluegrass break from the ground up. We start with the melody and the chords, and the add the extras: double-stops, fills, runs, crosspicking, etc, to fill it out and make it sound great. At the end of each class, we'll have a complete solo that you could use in a jam session or even on stage!

During class, we will use the melody and chords to build an effective and playable bluegrass guitar break, taking suggestions from the class as we go. After the class, you will receive a PDF tab of the completed break, and access to a video recap and performance of what we worked on. Whether you learn best from TAB or by ear, you'll have something to help you remember what we learned in class.

Note: The goal of this ongoing series is not just that you would learn the songs, but also that you would learn a process to create breaks on your own. While we may reference a famous recording of the song, the breaks we create in this class will be our own, based on the melody and chords of the song. We will not be learning note-for-note transcriptions from the album.
